In the 2022 Massachusetts elections, a new mandate was passed by ballot initiative. This mandate dictates that dental insurance providers must allocate a minimum of 83% of their premium revenue towards patient treatments and quality enhancement programs. Should an insurance firm fail to meet this threshold, known as the medical loss ratio (MLR), they are obliged to provide rebates to their policyholders, which is taking affect in early 2024.
